Even After Election, Germany Likely to Stand Fast - “Whoever is elected, the constraints that Merkel has faced will remain the same for any German government,” said Sylvie Goulard, a French representative to the European Parliament, who is a member of the liberal Democratic Movement party. Hostile public opinion and institutions that strictly interpret European Union laws will continue to bind Germany’s movement, making it difficult for the government to share the financial burdens of fellow euro zone members.
